Category Pirates became a top-5 paid newsletter on Substack in 1 year.
We built it to multiple 6-figures in revenue and completely dominated the category design education world.
Here’s how you can do it too:
Start a paid Category Newsletter.
Write 1 tangible, objective issue per week.
Package 4-6 newsletters on 1 topic and upload them as a mini-book on Amazon.
Readers love it because they can read it on Substack, listen to it on Audible, and they can keep a print copy on their desk.
(And you get to double-monetize your content.)
I’m still obsessed with this publishing model.
But one of the biggest mistakes people make when they launch their newsletter and try this approach:
They don’t name & claim their category.
Instead, they name it something CLEVER like “The Furry Friend Zone” to show off their creativity.
Cute, right? But…do you have any idea what “The Furry Friend Zone” is about, what makes it different, or why you should read it? Compare that to“The Senior Dog Specialist: Gentle Walks & Medicine Management for Elderly Pets.”
Right away, you know exactly what this newsletter is about.
What grabs your attention is the niche.
And you’ll subscribe because you’re interested in that CATEGORY of topic.
If people have no idea WHY they should subscribe, you’ll never attract a raving audience of loyal readers, you’ll struggle to monetize your newsletter, and you’ll fall back into the newsletter ocean… never to be heard from again.
We don’t want you to make this mistake.
