The “Pitch In Public” Strategy To Land LinkedIn Ghostwriting Clients
Once you’ve tapped your existing network, how do you find more ghostwriting clients?
Most writers resort to cold DMs—but there’s a much better way.
I call it Pitching in Public.
Instead of chasing clients, you attract them by creating content about them.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Identify People In Your Niche Who Fit One Of Two Profiles
1/ They aren't on LinkedIn (but should be).
A YouTuber with a massive audience but no LinkedIn presence
A CEO who’s active on X but invisible on LinkedIn
An entrepreneur crushing it on Instagram but missing LinkedIn opportunities
2/ They’re on LinkedIn but doing it poorly.
Inconsistent posting
Low-quality content
Not leveraging their expertise
Take a look at your potential client’s last 25 LinkedIn posts and figure out what they could be doing better to increase their reach. And if they’re not posting yet, start by analyzing their profile.
Make tons of notes and get ready to pitch!
Step 2: Write Your Public Pitch
Instead of sending them a private message, write a long-form LinkedIn post analyzing:
Their current success on other platforms
The opportunity they’re missing on LinkedIn
How they could repurpose their existing content
The potential business impact LinkedIn could have for them
This is everything you’d normally say in a private pitch—except now, it’s public.
Here’s an example of one in action:
Here’s a template you can use:
Part 1: Sing Their Praises. Be nice! In the first part of the pitch, explain how they are currently crushing what they’re doing.
Part 2: Break down what they’re doing wrong. After giving them a glowing write up, start to break down where they’re going wrong and what happens if they continue to go down the same path. Again. Be nice! You want to be a trusted consultant (not an internet troll).
Part 3: Show them what they should be doing instead. This is where you introduce the solution (which just happens to be your LinkedIn writing service). Show them what they should be doing by giving them an example of what the alternative would look like.
Part 4: Explain the Ultimate Positive Outcome. Now they know what the alternative is, explain the benefits of having this and the Ultimate Positive Outcome it will create the for client (in terms of time, money, status etc).
Part 5: Add A CTA. Don’t forget this! What should the client do if they want to know more? Get them to DM you!
Alright, now you have your pitch. Let’s launch it!
Step 3: Launch The Pitch
Hit “Publish” on your Pitch In Public.
To give your post a bit of a boost, ask friends to like and comment. This isn’t essential, but every little helps!
“But won’t they get mad?”
I hear this all the time.
Here’s what actually happens:
They see your post and think: “Wow, that’s actually really smart. Why aren’t I creating content on LinkedIn?”And then they reach out to you. Even if the person you feature never responds, others like them will.
Imagine 10 other personal trainers thinking: “They didn’t mention me, but I see myself in this. I should be on LinkedIn too.”
That’s how one post can bring you multiple clients.
Here’s why it’s so effective as an outreach method:
You stand out from 99% of other ghostwriters. How often do you see this kind of outreach? Probably never. So when your potential client sees you doing it, they sit up and take notice. All business owners want to know how they could be doing better, and by doing it publicly, you’re drawing attention to yourself, your expertise, and how you can help your potential client.
It catches the attention of other people. Khalid doesn’t land every single client he Pitches In Public. But all of his PIP attracted the attention of other people in the space, and helped him land sales calls with them (and some of them turned into paying clients). This is the power of Pitching in Public—you don’t know who’s timeline you might end up in.
This is one of the most effective strategies I teach ghostwriters.
Because unlike a cold DM, a public pitch lives forever.
Here’s your action step for today:
Pick one person and write a thoughtful public analysis of:
Their current success
The LinkedIn opportunity they’re missing
How they could transform their presence
The specific business results they could achieve
Then post it publicly. (Tag them if you’re comfortable.)
And watch what happens.
