Ahoy, Digital Writers!
Today, we are bringing in special guest and Full Stack Writer Matt Giaro to help you write your weekly newsletter with ChatGPT—lightning fast. We’ve been following Matt for awhile now and we believe you can learn a ton from his systems on note-taking, course creation, and more.
Here’s Matt:
One of the best ways to monetize your writing is by building an email list.
The reason?
It gives you direct access to your audience without middlemen. It also allows you to build a deep relationship with your subscribers (so that you can sell your digital products on command.)
Unfortunately most writers:
Don’t have a list
Or… are building lists without mailing consistently!
They skip one week, then two, and then end up in an endless procrastination spiral.
And as a result, they end up with a disengaged audience (that sometimes even don’t remember them!) That’s why today, we are going to show you how to write your weekly newsletter in 5 minutes (or less) using ChatGPT.
So you can forget about spending endless hours generating ideas, writing draft after draft (then shelving it), and finally get your newsletter out there.
Let’s dive in!
Step 1: The Easiest Way To Write A Newsletter Fast (And Stay Consistent)
A newsletter is a mix of two things:
An idea: “Write a newsletter using ChatGPT.”
An angle: “How to do it in 5 minutes or less.”
The idea presents "what" you're talking about, while the angle is the unique perspective, approach, or hook—the "how" you're discussing it.
There are a ton of different angles you could use in your newsletter. But the easiest angle is the listicle, which is nothing more than a compilation of tips. Your reader can pick any tip, implement it right away, and see results.
A lot of popular content uses listicles.
Here are 3 of my the articles that attracted thousands of readers on Medium in the past weeks:
What’s the Best Note-Taking System to Create Content?
How to Build a $5,000 to $10,000/Month Content Empire in Only 2 Hours a Day
How to Create Content 10 Times Faster by Combining Note-Taking and ChatGPT
And guess what? They’re all listicles.
Bottom line: People LOVE listicles. You can’t go wrong with listicles for your newsletter either!
Step 2: Uncover Compelling Newsletter Ideas Your Audience Will Want to Read
Now that we settled on the angle, you need an idea.
And there are several ways you can come up with newsletter ideas that will deeply resonate with your target audience and drive more engagement.
You could use your notes.
You could look at popular content.
You could also use ChatGPT.
Let’s see how.
First, let’s give ChatGPT enough context. Remember, AI is an assistant. It can’t read your mind (yet.) So if you give it garbage instructions it will output garbage content.
To find a great idea you need to feed AI the following information:
Who are you?
Who are you talking to?
What type of piece are you writing?
What’s your goal for the piece you’re writing?
Here’s a prompt that you can use to let ChatGPT brainstorm compelling newsletter ideas that your audience is excited about reading:
I'm writing an email newsletter for {Target Audience}.
The newsletter format is a listicle (compilation of tips).
It has to be educational, entertaining, and readable in 5 minutes or less.
The best newsletter topics are those that directly appeal to the reader, helping them overcome one specific problem and/or achieve one specific desire.
As an example, if my audience is diabetics with type 2, then a good newsletter article would be "5 Breakfast Ideas To Keep Your Blood Sugar Level Below 180."
If my audience is founders who want to make more money with their SAAS, a good outcome would be "6 Easy Ways To Increase Your SAAS User Retention."
Here's how we'll proceed:
1. Find 10 specific struggles that my audience is facing.
2. Find 10 specific desires my audience wants to achieve.
3. Come up with 10 specific newsletter topics that I can pick from.
Let’s assume I’m creating content for single moms who have to raise kids between the ages of 2 and 6.
Here’s how my first prompt would look like:
ChatGPT is going to follow the instructions and first identify specific struggles:
Then, identify the desires.
And finally, give you 10 precise newsletter ideas:
I like idea number 6. So that’s the one I’m going to use in this example.
With this prompt, it has never been easier to find compelling newsletter ideas “on-demand.”
