Newsletter Brand Identity 101

First things first… some helpful reminders:

• You do not need some big, fancy brand identity in order to launch your newsletter.

• You do not need to spend thousands of dollars creating a “brand kit.”

• You do not need to obsess over this decision for weeks (or months!).

For our first newsletter, Start Writing Online, we had no brand identity except for an emoji.

That’s literally it.

And then we made the colors of the landing page red and white… to match the emoji.

And yet, we still:

• Attracted tens of thousands of email subscribers

• Sold $1,000,000+ worth of digital products

• And built Ship 30 for 30 into the #1 beginner writing program on the Internet

So anyone who says, “I need a fancy brand kit in order to be professional!” is just procrastinating.

You can always do this later.

But you don’t need it to get started.

Newsletter Brand Identity With AI (Walkthrough)

Now, what is a brand identity really?

• It’s a logo (or logo element… like an emoji!)

• It’s 1-2 fonts

• It’s 1-3 colors

That’s it.

For example:

Not to take anything away from designers, because design really is an art and great designers are truly incredible at what they do…. but as far as “starting a newsletter” goes, you just need something to get you going.

And the truth is, now you can create a really great V1 using AI.

So, I’m going to walk you through how to do that (since that’s what we did!).

Step 1: Use Looka

Looka.com is the best AI-design tool I’ve come across.

• It’s very easy to use.

• And you can create a logo in <10 minutes.

Now, the only “downside” (which is hilarious to say considering it used to cost thousands of dollars to hire a graphic designer) is that it costs ~$100 to use the logo you create.

Looka’s model is intended to be a subscription, where you create the logo & brand kit and then pay to “keep it.”

But to be honest, that’s not really what happens.

Instead, you can just pay the $96 for the “year” to download the entire brand kit in high-quality resolution, and then cancel the subscription. And as long as you don’t see yourself changing/needing to edit your logo or brand kit, you won’t need to re-continue the subscription.

So even though it’s a “subscription,” it’s really just a one-time fee of $96 and then you can cancel.

Which is what we’ve done for all of our logos.
