Ahoy, Digital Writers!
Most big creators are drowning in comments.
6 posts a day with anywhere from 100 to 1,000 comments is enough for anyone to slam their laptop shut, turn notifications off, and look for the closest “no tech” cafe. The problem is engagement/commenting is the key to growth on LinkedIn, “X,”Instagram, etc.
Don’t participate and your account dies.
If you want to grow, you have to:
Write fresh content—everyday
Respond to the people who engage with you—everyday
Comment on other creators work—everyday
It’s hard.
And it’s not just the big creators, new creators struggle too. They have all the same problems, but the volume skews in the direction of commenting on other accounts versus their own at first.
Here’s the thing:
The temptation is to cheat.
“Hack” the algorithm.
Reply, but save time with short, vague responses.
“Thanks!”
“Great post!”
“Agree!”
But these types of replies can turn folks away.
Because instead of engaging, you are gaming. And no one wants to be “gamed” in a relationship. Which is what you are building on social media—an army of friends.
What to do?
Spend hours writing highly personalized responses?
Block 30 minutes every day to focus on responding?

5 Simple Rules For Writing Thoughtful Comments
How you comment is as important as what you say.
When done well, your comments set you apart from all the other people opting for short & vague.
Follow these 5 rules on any comment you write (and watch your follower count rise).
Rule #1: Give a Personal Take. Share your own experience or advice. Your personal stories are what people connect with on social media. It’s how they get to know you—and trust you. "I faced a similar challenge in my early days. What helped me was..."
Rule #2: Make Them Laugh. A joke or funny remark can lighten things up. Humor breaks the ice. It makes interactions feel less formal and more human. Just don’t overdo it. "Reminds me of the time I tried to bake and set off the smoke alarm. Some of us are born chefs, and others... well, not so much."
Rule #3 Educate. Got a cool fact or tip? Share it. Everyone loves to learn new things. And it builds your credibility. "Did you know? The world's shortest war lasted just 38 minutes!"
Rule #4: Ask a Smart Question. A good question can stir up more discussion. It encourages others to share their thoughts, keeping the conversation flowing. "Interesting point. But have you considered the impact on the environment?"
Rule #5: Give an Opposing View. It's okay to see things differently. Just remember to be polite. Forcing a choice always gets people talking. "I get where you're coming from, but from my experience, I've found the opposite to be true."
Use these rules a guide they next time you jump into writing comments.
And pay attention to how other writers and creators respond. Be data-driven.
Double-down on what works with your audience.
How To Choose What To Comment On (And How)
Pick one point that another writer made and comment.
That’s it.
A common mistake people make when commenting is over-analyzing another writer's words and then straining to offer fresh insights. Often this is exactly what sucks the life out of creators because they are over-thinking everything.
Instead, pick one idea that stands out to you and comment on it.
A tweet with 3 bullets. Pick one bullet.
A thread with 10 points. Pick one point.
A photo with 2 people in it. Pick one person.
Once you have something to comment on, ask yourself the following questions:
Do I agree with this idea? Why?
What’s a question this raises for me?
What’s my experience with this topic?
Then write your comment.
And if you are still stuck, here are a few thought-starter templates to get your mind going.
No, but…
Yes, but…
Yes, and…
Wow, amazing..
No, furthermore..
I have a question {question}
This is interesting because {reason}
You’re so right, {affirming statement}
I’ve been thinking about this too {perspective}
I’m curious about, can you say more about {idea}
Love this, here’s an additional thought {your thought}
I’ve been struggling with the same thing too {here’s why}
This is so important, I’m glad you brought it up {here’s why}
Great point, I’m wondering if you could elaborate more {here’s why}
Write a lot of comments and you will get faster (and it will get easier).
