Category Of One: Follow These 7 Simple Prompts And ChatGPT Will Help You Niche Down
This is how you standout online.
Ahoy, Digital Writers!
Today we want to help you think like a Category Creator and take your first step to becoming known for a niche you own.
Whether you’ve been writing online and creating digital products for a long time, or are just getting started, you might still be asking yourself:
“What in the scurvy sea-dog is my niche?!”
Everyone struggles with this. It’s one on the Top 10 biggest questions, if not THE #1 question, people have when it comes to creating content, launching products, and building businesses. And the question behind the question is:
“What makes me different?”
And so when people ask the question, “How do I create a niche for myself?” that’s a very powerful and valuable question to have answered.
Right?
Because if you can figure out what makes you different—and you have gained the skill of being able to CREATE what makes you different over and over again—then you possess a superpower not very many people have.
Let’s dive in!
You do not want to be “better.”
Think about what “better” means for a second.
“Better” implies you are similar to what already exists. “Better” means there actually isn’t very much separating you from the next person. And even if you are “a ton better,” you are still existing within the context of someone else. Pepsi always mentions Coke. Coke never mentions Pepsi.
Category Kings never acknowledge they have any competition.
They are the 1 and only.
Instead, what you want is to be DIFFERENT.
Remove “better” from your vocabulary.
Get rid of it. If you find yourself writing “better” anywhere to describe who you are and what you do, that’s a neon signal you haven’t yet pinpointed what makes you different. You are still rooted to “what exists.” And you haven’t pioneered new ground… yet.
When you are different, you force readers, followers, and customers to make a choice.
You want your audience to have to choose between the “old thing” and the “new thing.” And the bigger the gap you create between the two, the easier it is for the person to decide: “Yes this is 100% what I’m looking for” or “No this is 100% NOT what I’m looking for.”
And that’s good news for you.
“OK this makes sense. But how do I stop being ‘Better,’ and how can I actually start being ‘DIFFERENT?’”
You can speak to a different problem. For example: if a conventional problem in personal finance is, “I don’t know how to invest money,” don’t pick that problem. Pick something different!
You can speak to a different solution. For example, if a conventional solution in health & wellness is to “eat healthy,” then don't waste your effort running around trying to evangelize the same obvious solution. Recommend something different!
You can speak to a different audience. Instead of talking to college graduates “better” than all the other people who talk to college graduates, talk to a different (more specific) audience: high-school graduates, middle-school graduates, grad school graduates, etc. These are DIFFERENT audiences.
The big idea here is that whenever you see lots of people all speaking to the same audience, about the same problem, recommending the same solution, within the same time horizon, in the same context, go do the opposite.
Most people understand this in theory, but when push comes to shove, they chase acceptance.
They can’t do it.
They would rather “fight” to fit in, than go their own way and easily stand out.
Our goal is to help you do the latter.
