You'll want to come back to it as you work through each step of the process.
And when you’re done, you’ll want to grab these 4 ways to come up with viral worthy lead magnet ideas to keep your newsletter flywheel spinning.
Let’s dive in.
Step 1: Nail Your Newsletter Value Proposition
The foundation of any successful newsletter is a clear, compelling value proposition.
So this first prompt will help you brainstorm a compelling newsletter value proposition - which is going to give you the foundation to create a differentiated, money-making newsletter.
So, crack open your preferred LLM, copy/paste the prompt below, and then fill in the variables at the end with your personal info:
Hey there, I need your help.
I am looking to start a newsletter in 2025.
However, I don't want to just "write emails" for the sake of writing emails.
Instead, I want to have a solid strategy in place so that:
1/ It's a no brainer for my ideal readers to sign up for my newsletter when they find themselves on my opt-in page.
2/ It's easy for me to write banger emails consistently (because I have complete clarity over what the "value prop" of my newsletter is).
3/ I can become the go-to person/creator in my niche - and I can easily monetize my email list through my products & services when I'm ready.
But, for this to be true, I need to first clarify and decide on the "value proposition" of my newsletter.
And to make sure we're on the same page, here's what I mean by a "newsletter value proposition":
A newsletter value proposition is the "value" we're promising to give people each week through our emails.
For example, my friend Daniel Bustamante has a newsletter called Funnel Breakdowns - and his newsletter value proposition is extremely clear and compelling:
"Every week, I spend 10-15 hours studying the funnel of a successful creator. Then, I send you an in-depth email breaking down each part of their funnel so you can (1) replicate what they're doing well & (2) avoid their mistakes (without wasting hours in research)."
Another great example is Alex Hormozi's Mozi Minute Newsletter - here's his value proposition:
"Each email is a one-minute read breaking down a proven business tactic that, if implemented, will make you more money. Every email pays for itself."
So with all of this in mind, here's what we're going to do:
I'm going to share with you more information about the niche I create content around and the specific types of readers I want to attract for my newsletter.
Then, based on that information, you're going to help me brainstorm 10 potential newsletter value propositions I could run with.
Now, for the time being, we just want to brainstorm newsletter value propositions - so please avoid coming up with names for each value prop at this stage.
Lastly, please keep in mind: Each of these value propositions should be extremely compelling for the reader but also have enough constraints so I can realistically deliver on the promise I'm making to the reader every week.
Here's my information:
I'm a [insert profession/role/title] and I help [target audience] [solve specific problem/unlock specific outcome] through [using specific method].
Pro tip: Pay special attention to the examples provided in the prompt (like my Funnel Breakdowns value proposition and Alex's Mozi Minute). They show exactly what makes a value prop work.
After hitting “send” on the prompt above, your AI will give you a list of 20 different value propositions you could run with based on your specific niche & target audience.
Spend a few minutes reviewing the options and choose the one you like the most.
And don’t worry - this isn’t a marriage decision.
If, at some point in the future you want to revisit this, you absolutely can.
Once you have your value proposition locked in, move onto the next step.
Step 2: Brainstorm An A+ Newsletter Name
It's time to give your newsletter a punchy name that captures attention and communicates your unique value.
Grab the prompt below and use it to respond to the AI’s latest message - just make sure to fill in the variable with the value prop you chose for your newsletter:
Alright - I've decided I want to run with this newsletter value proposition:
[Insert value prop]
Now I would like your help coming up with 10 potential names for my newsletter.
But, there's a few important rules and guidelines I want you to follow, please:
• Each name variation should be aligned & clearly communicate the promise of the newsletter value proposition I chose
• Each name variation should ideally have 2-3 words (4-5 words is the limit).
• Each name variation should be both clear and compelling - and ideally it should contain a keyword that makes it extremely easy for people to "get" what the newsletter is about and what's in it for them
• When possible let's also try to leverage rhetorical devices to make the name as catchy and memorable as possible.
Review all the options and run with the one you like the most.
Just remember:
Aim for clarity over cleverness.
Step 3: Write Your Landing Page Copy
Boom - if you’ve made it this far that means you already have:
A compelling newsletter value prop
An punchy & memorable name for your newsletter
But why stop there?
Next, I’m going to give you a banger prompt that’s going to allow you to write all your above-the-fold landing page copy in 5-10 minutes (using the best copywriting frameworks I’ve learned over the past few years).
All you need to do is fill the variable in the prompt with the newsletter name you’ve picked.
In order to streamline this process, I’ve “front-loaded” all the instructions in one single prompt. However, the prompt is designed so the AI writes each part of the landing page one step at a time. So, all you gotta do is review the output it’s giving you at each stage and:
Decide whether you like one of the variations or you want to keep brainstorming new ones
And tell it which variation you’d like to proceed with (so it can move onto the next step)
Here’s the prompt:
